The Portage Junk Yard Dogs Cycling Club
Kids of Mud Program
Portage Junk Yard Dogs
What is KOM?
“Kids of Mud (KOM) is the official youth cycling program of the Manitoba Cycling Association (MCA) administered by a group of participating clubs. KOM is a learn-to-ride and learn-to-race program for kids 16 and younger covering the Fundamentals, Learn to Train and Train to Train stages of the Long Term Athlete Development pathway. Through the help of certified coaches and other volunteers, riders will learn the basics of off-road cycling with an opportunity to challenge their skill and fitness in any of the MCA mountain bike races open to age category racers.
Kids wishing to ride must have an approved cycling-specific helmet, a mountain bike with hand brakes and gears, and able to ride their bike without training wheels. Training with Kids of Mud includes safety, braking, gears, hills, racing (optional), riding over small and large obstacles, trail riding & trail etiquette, and more.
The Kids of Mud training program is run by volunteer, NCCP-certified coaches in clubs located in Winnipeg, Steinbach, McCreary, Swan River, Russell, Minnedosa, Dauphin, Stonewall, The Pas and Portage La Prairie. From http://www.kidsofmud.ca/
We are gearing up for another season of cycling in the Portage area with the Junk Yard Dogs Cycling Club (http://www.portagejyd.com). We have incredible trails and look forward to teaching the kids how to ride off-road.
With newly trained coaches, we will be accepting 16 children aged 6-12 for the JYD KOM program. Weekly training sessions will be Wednesdays from 6:30-8:00PM from Mid-April to the end of June.
Off road cycling is an ideal outdoor physical activity that combines the best of individual and team sport values offering both physical and mental challenges in a fun and supportive atmosphere. Our focus is on fun, fitness and skill development.
Our coaches have a wide range of experience and abilities. Our goal is to make the sport enjoyable for each child. Kids will be grouped with their peers (by age category and/or ability level) and led by club coaches and volunteers.
KOM isn’t just for kids, we encourage parents to ride with us. Any parent or volunteer participating in club rides MUST purchase a MCA general license and be a JYD member. Proof of purchase is required prior to riding.
Our club will take part in a multi-club race series with other KOM clubs. Participation in this series is completely optional, but encouraged. Our KOM club will host a race at Birch Mountain Trails mid-June.
Helmets are mandatory while riding at any Kids of Mud activity. This includes kids, parents and volunteers. There are no exceptions!
